Journey from Historic Ford to Modern Marina

Tailrace Marina, with its rich history, stands on the remnants of Superior Yarn Mill located at the Tuckaseegee Ford on the Catawba River, a site of significant historical relevance. The marina's name is derived from the mill's 'tailrace'. Traces of the  'tailrace'' and 'headrace' structures are still visible on the site today. This area was once a critical crossing on the Tuckaseegee Trail, serving as a major thoroughfare for Native Americans and European settlers traveling to and from the burgeoning city of Charlotte and beyond.

The Tuckaseegee Ford was not only a key transit point but also a focal site for the community and economic activities. The surrounding areas, rich with history, saw the early European settlers, including Thomas Spratt and Thomas Polk, establishing their homes in the 1750s. The confluence of the Tuckaseegee Trail and the great Trading Path at Charlotte bolstered the town's early development, providing a strategic advantage over other Piedmont towns and fostering growth long before the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s.

In 2007, the historical site began a new chapter when Bob Wilson, owner of Rowboat Dock and Dredge, acquired the property. Envisioning a community center around water-based activities, Bob designed and established Tailrace Marina. Opening to the public in 2010, the marina was soon followed by additional developments including luxury apartments and a restaurant, contributing to the site’s modern allure while respecting its rich history.

Throughout their ownership, Bob and Ineke Wilson were meticulous in preserving the natural beauty and historical integrity of the marina, ensuring it remained a cherished locale. In 2024, Hunter and Banks Wilson took over the stewardship, committed to honoring the legacy of the marina while guiding it towards a prosperous future, blending its historical roots with contemporary enhancements.
